报告简介:

Knowledge of mechanical properties of bones and porous biomaterials is important for designing bone replacements and implants as well as developing effective medical treatment of bone diseases such as osteoporosis. However, bone, especially trabecular bone, is a highly anisotropic and heterogeneous living tissue. Micro-computed-tomography (micro-CT) is used for nondestructive investigation of three-dimensional trabecular bone architecture. To link the bone micro-architecture and its mineral distribution gradients to overall mechanical response of trabecular bone, a finite element (FE) model is often constructed from the micro-CT voxel data of a representative cubic bone samples. The microstructure-based trabecular bone model, once validated, will be useful to aid the development of bone-implant interface optimization, radiation surgery treatment of certain spine cord diseases, and prevention of spine injury and hip fracture. In this talk, our on-going research effort in developing and validating a sample-specific micro-FE model of trabecular bone at continuum and mesoscopic levels will be described. In particular, a mechanical testing technique was developed for compressing the bone sample beyond its maximum strength with extensive 3D surface deformation mapping measurements. The results complement volumetric deformation mapping measurements based on micro-CT images and 3D ultrasound measurements of the same cubic samples and will be part of a comprehensive data base for validating the micro-FE model of trabecular bones.
