Brain imaging of human hand and tool actions

Dr. Culham will discuss new results using fMRI decoding methods (multivoxel pattern analysis, MVPA). In several experiments, subjects planned and executed hand objects toward objects within direct view. Numerous brain regions in human parietal and frontal cortex – as well as areas implicated in visual perception – were able to decode upcoming hand actions. In one experiment, subjects performed reaching or grasping actions with a hand or a tool. While some brain areas were able to decode hand actions only or tool actions only, other areas (such as premotor cortex) were able to decode actions with either the hand or the tool in a common framework. These results suggest that many human brain areas contain a rich representation of actions seconds before an action is performed. Moreover, in some regions these representations can incorporate goals regardless of whether they are accomplished by the hand or a tool.
