报告人简介:

Aaron H.P. Ho received his BEng and PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham in 1986 and 1990 respectively. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He has held positions as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science, City University of Hong Kong (1996-2002), Senior Process Engineer in Fiber Optics Components Operation of Hewlett-Packard (1994-96), research fellow in University of Nottingham and University of Leeds, UK (1989-94). Started as a compound semiconductor materials scientist, his academic interests have evolved over the years to cover a broad range of topics including nano-sized semiconductor materials for photonic and sensor applications, optical instrumentation, photonic biosensors based on the surface plasmon resonance effect and biophotonics. He has published over 230 journal/conference/book chapter articles and 5 US patents. He is a fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, senior member of IEEE and currently the chairman of the Hong Kong Optical Engineering Society.

报告简介:

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are characteristic responses associated with light-metal interactions. They typically result in highly localized optical field in the nanometer scale with much enhanced intensity. These properties have been shown to be effective for label-free detection of binding between bio-molecular species and spectroscopic analysis such as Raman scattering. Recent expansion in nanophotonics and bio-related research has prompted us to explore new ideas for achieving better SPR photonic biosensors. We started by demonstating that the measurement of differential phase between the s- and p-polarization components is highly effective in removing common-path noise. This technique is well suited for SPR imaging applications in which parallel sensing of multiple analytes might become possible. Various approaches for further enhancement of phase-detection performance are discussed. In the second part of this presentation, our recent research on focusing of SPP for cascaded field enhancement, active plasmonic waveguides with loss compensation and nano-trapping are also presented.
